{"id":104,"date":"2013-07-19T17:50:33","date_gmt":"2013-07-19T17:50:33","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/papabenskitchen.com\/blog\/?p=104"},"modified":"2013-09-25T07:22:15","modified_gmt":"2013-09-25T07:22:15","slug":"living-a-life-that-matters","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.papabenskitchen.dreamhosters.com\/blog\/living-a-life-that-matters","title":{"rendered":"Living a Life That Matters"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>All at once, Papa Ben makes us proud and humbles us. \u00a0He has dedicated his life to sharing his stories with all those willing to listen, most recently at the Los Angeles Museum of the Holocaust\u00a0(LAMOTH). \u00a0This past\u00a0Sunday,\u00a0June 14th\u00a0at LAMOTH Ben read passages from his book\u00a0<i>Living a Life That Matter<\/i><i>s<\/i><i>: from Nazi Nightmare to American Dream.\u00a0<\/i>For those of you who do not know, Papa Ben is a Holocaust survivor. \u00a0And while most in his shoes would like to forget such memories, he\u00a0willingly\u00a0relives them each and every day\u00a0by sharing his story to ensure that others will not forget.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/papabenskitchen.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/Papa-Ben-Headhshot1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" alt=\"Papa Ben\" src=\"http:\/\/papabenskitchen.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/Papa-Ben-Headhshot1-200x300.jpg\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a>Ben had a pretty normal childhood until he and his family were forced\u00a0to go on the run and eventually\u00a0into a Jewish ghetto. From there he was sent to concentration camps Auschwitz-Birkenau,\u00a0Durnhau, Buchenwald, then Dachau\u00a0and after what felt like a lifetime Ben was finally liberated from his nightmare. \u00a0He eventually\u00a0traveled to New York City and later to Los Angeles. \u00a0He started as a\u00a0driver for UPS\u00a0and eventually became the successful entrepreneur we know today.<\/p>\n<p>Years later he founded The\u00a0Zachor Holocaust Remembrance Foundation, a non-profit\u00a0organization\u00a0dedicated to the remembrance of the Holocaust. And soon after that he unveiled his bakery line, Papa Ben\u2019s\u00a0Kitchen\u00a0specializing in Mandelbroyt, an eastern European biscotti-like cookie that he fondly remembers learning how to bake with his father before the war.<\/p>\n<p>Ben has taken his tragic past and transformed it in to something beautiful. \u00a0Through his speaking, his foundation and now his book he is teaching people the power of love.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMore than anything else, I understand the power of love to eliminate hate. The love\u00a0of my parents, who were massacred by the Nazis, gave me the foundation that my life has been built on. My love for them and my brutally murdered sister and brothers fills my heart to this day. And in the horror of Hitler\u2019s concentration camps, there was no way to even imagine that one day I would live to find my soul mate, my best friend and the love of my life, my wide of 63 years, Jean.
